INSTALLATION
An Interactive Sound Installation with Loud Objects “2 x i5_high.c, 1 x i5_low.c” is an interactive soundscape of drifting, drone-like tones generated by microchips. There are three independent sound sources, each with its own separate speaker, speaker enclosure, and set of buttons that visitors can press to raise and lower the pitches of the drones. These sound sources are “mixed” with a fourth microchip and sent through the fourth speaker. As the pitch of the drones rise and fall with respect to one another, acoustical interference patterns lend shape to the sound, and unexpected moments of clarity and of discord can be experienced as one moves through the space of the installation. At one side of each speaker, the microchip and wiring are exposed, allowing visitors to understand how the installation works.
