Structural Substitution

Structural Substitution

DANCE

choreography by Katie Shima, music by Kunal Gupta, performed by Katie Shima, Alex Orzeck-Byrnes, and Rebecca Warner This dance was a response to an idea of noise music and how it takes away the traditional structures that listeners use to grasp a piece of music (rhythm, form, pattern), rather substituting an alternate structure that the listener must learn live or not at all. This tripartite piece attempted a similar structural substitution in the context of improvisational partner dance. Performed at the Nhebraska Noise Festival, the Tank, Fall 2005.
