STUDIO PROJECT
with Sharon Kim music by the Loud Objects graduate school independent research project; critic: Mark Bearak The project attempted to create an inhabitable field of sound and light that would reflect subtle changes in its environment. We imagined this outdoor canopy as a site-specific orchestra of tiny, solar-powered electronic instruments resonating in and protected by glass bottles. As the incident angle of the sun changes throughout the day and year, we imagined that the glass bottles would refract and reflect light in shifting patterns and that the solar-powered instruments would change in their tonality. We decided to build up our collection of glass bottles from what our fellow studio-mates would otherwise have thrown away, and we ended up with a wide range of shapes, sizes, and colors. We were interested in using scripting – which lends itself to constructs made of raw material rather than found objects – to deal with the peculiarities of each bottle type and organize the motley collection into a cohesive pattern.
